Here are the three best techniques for generating a strong password:
1. The Diceware methodIt involves randomly choosing several unrelated words and numbers:

Long, easy to remember, and extremely difficult to crack (do not include hyphens between the words). Note that the choice of words must be truly random. The Diceware method uses dice.
